Hey everyone, I am trying to create some pixel art (specifically a tarot card deck) for fun. I have made some small pieces here and there for some websites but I have always just eyeballed the colors. These pieces are a bit larger (256x142) and I am trying to gift them to a friend who is an art major (which means someone other than me will see my work).I would like to understand how to better craft a color palette so the picture meshes better, has better shading, and feels more rich or calculated than my previous pieces. I have read about color ramps as well as taking a single color and shifting in along a given scale (in the tutorials posted no this sub).

But I am curious to know what you do to make your palette, if there are any tools that are helpful (or websites), and if there are some good practices or rules I should follow.I currently use Aseprite although for the longest time I was using GraphicsGale. Thanks for your help in advance. Everyone has their own techniques but here's a few pointers!:.Think of the overall color scheme you want.

That being said, also think about how colors relate to each other on the color wheel. In general, less is more. Re-use colors as much as possible. For example, if you're pixelling someone who is blond, peach skinned, and has gold trimmings, try'n manipulate the colors so you can use the same color ramp for all 3 of those things instead of coming up with a set of colors for each individual thing. It will tie everything together and make the palette easier to manage.CONTRAST. Contrast is so important.

You want your highlights and your shadows to really stick out, that is what defines shapes and form. If there isn't a lot of contrast then the piece will look flat.Hue shifting helps with the two above points. It will allow you to connect color ramps and having colors share ramps will help eliminate unnecessary colors. I was lost with colors when i first started pixelling and this link right here was a godsend. Changed my life I telluwut.I highly recommend reading up on the relationship between colors as well as utilizing neutral/neutralizing colors.Color palette building and using is one of my favorite aspects of pixel art so lemme know whenever I can be of assistance:D.
